Mississauga is hosting a big end-of-summer pool party in a couple of weeks and spaces, as usual, are filling up fast.

To be more specific, the big event, taking place Saturday, Sept. 12 at three City of Mississauga-run pools, is for dogs only.

The annual Dogs Only Swim takes place throughout the day on that Saturday at Applewood, David Ramsey and Lions Club of Credit Valley outdoor pools.

Dog owners will bring their four-legged pals to the pool for hour-long scheduled play sessions — but only the dogs are allowed in the water. Their humans will serve as chaperones and remain on the deck.

The giant canine pool party has become so popular that city officials began hosting the annual doggy splash-around event at three swimming pools last year, instead of one.

The fun starts in the morning and continues throughout the day until mid-to-late afternoon.

For more information on specific times or to register for a session, visit the city’s Active Mississauga site online.

How much more would you pay to buy Canadian instead of American?

The event, first held in 2019, is free to attend (although a donation to Mississauga Animal Services is recommended) and open to all ages (both people and their dogs).

Organizers say space is limited, so those interested are urged to register online prior to the event, if possible.

City of Mississauga officials have called the dog swim party “the cutest event of the year” and are again expecting a strong turnout.

“If your dog could use some excitement, exercise and an opportunity to socialize with other dogs, then this event is perfect for you,” city officials said earlier, adding since its inception seven years ago, “this annual tradition has brought the community together for a good cause.”

Donations collected online or in-person during the registration process will go to Mississauga Animal Services to help animals housed in the shelter recover until they are healthy enough to be adopted.

While the doggy swim is free to attend, participants are encouraged to make a donation.

To participate in the event, dog owners must complete a waiver form and adhere to all posted rules. Included in the rules are that dogs must be vaccinated and licensed in order to take part in the swim.
