Police say a Mississauga man stole items worth $50 to $4,000 in different thefts that added up to more than $35,000 and dozens of charges.
The string of retail thefts happened across the Greater Toronto Area and Ontario, and Peel Regional Police say items were stolen in 38 separate theft-related incidents.
Investigators launched an operation dubbed Project Bishop in April, and say all of the thefts were linked back to one “prolific” offender.
Victims were identified in Peel, Halton and Durham regions, Hamilton, York, and the Niagara area, police say. Merchandise stolen in each incident ranged from approximately $50 to more than $4,000.
Searches in Mississauga and Welland led officers to more than $35,000 worth of stolen merchandise. The pilfered items included cosmetics, and personal accessories, police say.
Peel police say Anthony Orlando Monteith, 49, of Mississauga, was arrested on June 19 and has been charged with 24 counts of theft under $5,000 and 14 counts of possession of property obtained by crime.

“Officers continue to investigate offences where Monteith may be a suspect and anticipate further charges,” Peel police said in a release.
The string of thefts has police planning to hold a Retail Organized Crime Conference in October, which will bring together “law enforcement agencies, retail sector partners, and government partners to advance collaboration and develop a unified approach to disrupting organized retail crime that impacts our communities,” police say.
