A Winnipeg city councillor is calling on businesses across the city to fly Canadian flags, saying it would demonstrate unity amid what he describes as concerns over Canada’s sovereignty.
Deputy Mayor and St. Norbert-Seine River Coun. Markus Chambers is asking business owners to put Canadian flags on storefronts, offices, and other places of business.
Chambers is also proposing that Winnipeg will inspire a national movement, with businesses across the city becoming the first to take part.
He is encouraging businesses of all sizes to participate, describing the display of the Maple Leaf as a simple way to demonstrate solidarity.
“Canada’s sovereignty has been targeted, and now more than ever, we need to show the world — and each other — that we stand united,” Chambers said.

Chambers says Winnipeg could make a particularly visible statement by putting Canadian flags on what he describes as “Operation naked flag pole” in downtown Winnipeg.
He says a widespread display of flags throughout the city would send a message beyond Winnipeg.
“Let’s make this city the flagship for a national movement — literally,” Chambers said. “If every business in Winnipeg flies the flag, we send a clear message that Canadians are united, proud, and not backing down.”
Chambers is hoping participation in Winnipeg could encourage businesses in other Canadian communities to take up the idea.
