LETTER: Late-night noise plagues Surrey City Centre

I’m reaching out because persistent late-night vehicle noise around Surrey City Centre appears to be increasing and is becoming a serious livability issue for people living in the area.

Residents around King George Station, King George Boulevard and 100 Avenue are regularly exposed to extremely loud cars and motorcycles during late-night and early-morning hours. The recurring disturbances include engine revving, unusually loud exhaust systems, sudden hard acceleration and vehicles that appear to circle or return to the same streets multiple times during the night.

This issue has received attention before, including previous local coverage and concerns raised about excessive vehicle noise in Surrey City Centre. From what I am experiencing now, however, the problem appears to be becoming more frequent and more disruptive. That is one of the reasons I felt it was important to raise it again rather than assume the earlier attention had resolved it.

In a neighbourhood surrounded by residential towers, a few seconds of excessive vehicle noise can carry across a large area and potentially disturb hundreds or even thousands of people at once. The abrupt nature of these sounds makes them especially disruptive to sleep for families with young children, seniors, students, shift workers, people getting up early for work and many others living nearby.

I live on the 30th floor near King George Station, and these vehicles can still be loud enough to wake me with the windows closed, earplugs in and white noise playing. That experience prompted me to raise the issue, while the density of Surrey City Centre makes the wider impact much more significant than any one resident’s experience.

I have contacted relevant municipal, policing, bylaw and elected officials as well, asking that the issue be kept on record and that practical measures such as targeted late-night monitoring and enforcement be considered around King George Boulevard, 100 Avenue and the streets surrounding King George Station.
