August 30 delivered a first Formula 1 victory for Michael Schumacher, Jordan’s breakthrough triumph in chaos at Spa, and major milestones for McLaren and Ferrari across several generations.
The date also marks the birth of Bruce McLaren in 1937. The New Zealander became a Grand Prix winner, engineer and team founder, creating a name that would become one of Formula 1’s most successful constructors.
The defining August 30 moment came at the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix, when Schumacher claimed his maiden Formula 1 victory for Benetton.
Only one year after making his F1 debut at Spa, Schumacher mastered changing conditions to beat newly crowned World Champion Nigel Mansell by 36.595 seconds. Riccardo Patrese finished third, securing Williams the 1992 Constructors’ Championship.
Schumacher’s victory was the first for a German driver since Jochen Mass won the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix. It was also the first of Schumacher’s eventual 91 Grand Prix victories and the final F1 win achieved with an H-pattern manual gearbox.
The race also marked Ferrari’s 500th World Championship start as a team and the final appearance for the troubled Andrea Moda operation.
Chaos at Spa
Six years later, in 1998, Spa produced one of Formula 1’s most chaotic and memorable races. Heavy rain triggered a huge first-lap accident involving 13 cars after David Coulthard lost control. The race was stopped, debris cleared and a restart held more than an hour later.
Mika Häkkinen then spun at the first corner and was collected by Johnny Herbert. Michael Schumacher later crashed into Coulthard while trying to lap the McLaren in heavy spray.
Through the chaos came Damon Hill and Jordan. Hill led teammate Ralf Schumacher home by 0.932 seconds, delivering Jordan its first Formula 1 victory after 126 starts. It was also Hill’s 22nd and final Grand Prix win, while Jean Alesi finished third for Sauber in what proved to be his final podium.
Räikkönen delivers Ferrari’s only 2009 win
In 1981, Alain Prost won the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort from pole for Renault. Nelson Piquet finished second for Brabham, moving into the championship lead on countback over Carlos Reutemann, while Alan Jones completed the podium for Williams.
On August 30, 2009, Kimi Räikkönen won again at Spa after starting sixth. The Ferrari driver beat Giancarlo Fisichella by just 0.939 seconds. Fisichella had put Force India on pole for the first and only time, while Sebastian Vettel finished third for Red Bull.
It was Räikkönen’s first victory since Spain in 2008 and Ferrari’s only win of the 2009 season.
Finally, Lewis Hamilton dominated the 2020 Belgian Grand Prix, leading every lap ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen. The weekend also carried a sombre tone, with Formula 1 remembering Anthoine Hubert one year after the French driver was killed at Spa.
