UFC Shanghai went down yesterday (Sat., Aug. 29, 2026) inside Shanghai Indoor Stadium in Shanghai, China, which saw Song Yadong secure a massive knockout win over Umar Nurmagomedov in a pivotal Bantamweight bout (highlights here). In the co-main event Denis Gomes also locked down a massive first-round stoppage win over Yan Xiaonan (see it again here).

Biggest Winner: Song Yadong

It may not have been as big an upset as Song knocking out Nurmargomedov, but Gomes (No. 9) secured a highlight-reel knockout win of her own over the No. 4-ranked fighter in the women’s Strawweight division, also in the very first round thanks to a nasty elbow shot that set it all up (see it again here). Gomes has now won five straight and should be crashing the Top 5 come next week.

Honorable Mention: Kai Asakura

Don’t look now, but Asakura i starting to fin his footing inside the Octagon. After kicking off his UFC career with two straight submission losses, Asakura has now racked up two straight knockout wins. The former RIZIN champion iced Aori Qileng in the opening round setup by a vicious head kick and topped off with ground and pound (see it again here). Asakura could be looking at a spot in the Top 15, a nice first step on his quest to land another title fight.

Biggest Loser: Umar Nurmagomedov

Right when Umar is about to make a case for another title shot he comes up short. This time around, he was shocked with a huge upset loss at the hands of Yadong, who clipped him early and ended his night in the first round, as well as his championship aspirations. Ranked No. 2 i n the 135-pound weight class, Nurmagomedov was seemingly just one more win away from getting back to the big dance for a chance to win gold after coming up short in his first title fight against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 311. This latest setback is a huge blow for him, as he will likely drop a spot or two, making his road back that much tougher. He has the skills, and he was simply caught by a big and accurate shot at the hands of Yadong, but despite not getting dominated for 15 minutes he still took an “L” and a potential drop in rankings.
