America’s top one-day pro cycling race takes place in Baltimore City on Saturday, September 6
Maryland Public Television (MPT) will again serve as the exclusive regional broadcaster of the Maryland Cycling Classic taking place in Baltimore on Saturday, September 6. The statewide public TV network will offer viewers up to nine hours of live coverage of the prestigious professional cycling race on MPT-HD, the MPT livestream, and the free PBS app.
The Maryland Cycling Classic will feature competitive cyclists from around the world including Tour de France participants, world champions, national champions, Olympians, and cycling heroes from 30 countries. Competitors include top teams from Europe and North America as well as the Benin National Team, which is slated to make history at the Maryland Cycling Classic as the first African female national team to participate in a major American pro road race.
The event is considered America’s premier one-day pro cycling race. It is also a UCI ProSeries one-day international cycling race sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and USA Cycling. The race is hosted by the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland.
MPT’s Maryland Cycling Classic coverage begins at 8 a.m. with a 30-minute preview show prior to the women’s race, featuring sports broadcaster Jim Hunter anchoring the MPT Sports Desk from Owings Mills. MPT reporters Sue Kopen, Nancy Yamada, and Charles Robinson will offer features on the women’s race and a local bike event, while former professional champion road-racing cyclist Fred “Fast Freddie” Rodriguez and other special guests will join in from the course to offer pre-race analysis and insights.
MPT will broadcast the women’s race starting at 8:30 a.m. Live coverage will continue through the men’s race winner crossing the finish line and the podium award ceremony, which is estimated to take place around 4:30 p.m. The network’s coverage will wrap up with a post-race MPT Sports Desk segment.
