Ontario’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate after one person was hit by the driver of a vehicle in the presence of the police on Sunday in Mississauga.
Const. Tyler Bell, of Peel Regional Police, said he is limited in what details he can share about what occurred.
“Officers responded to the area following reports of a disturbance involving two individuals fighting in the roadway,” he wrote in an email to CP24.
“During the incident, one of the individuals was struck by a passing vehicle. Their injuries are not considered serious.”
The media officer confirmed that the incident occurred while police were present but said he could not elaborate further on the “sequence of events at this time.”
At 11:48 a.m., police issued a traffic alert on X, advising motorists of a road closure on Viscount Road between Network Road and Highway 409. Drivers are being advised to use alternate routes. The road has since reopened.
They said this is an ongoing police investigation and there is no threat to the community.
Bell, meanwhile, said that the scene is being held as part of their investigation.
The Special Investigations Unit investigates when police are involved in an incident that results in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
