Aussie boxing legend Tony Mundine has passed away at the age of 75 after suffering a heart attack.
Code Sports understands Mundine, who fought for a world title in 1974, was surrounded by members of his family as he died in hospital.
He is the only Australian to have fought for titles across four weight divisions.
He is also the father of Anthony Mundine and was regularly in the corner for his son, who became a world champion.
Anthony is flying back to Australia from the Middle East following the news of his dad’s passing.
“I don’t know what to say, I’m broken,” he wrote in a post on Instagram.
“Thanks for doing all you did for me and supporting me in every moment showing love and strength.
“Gonna miss you Tonza there’s only one Tony Mundine.”
Tony was a key figure in the Indigenous movement, as well as a leading figure in Australian sport.
He was in impressive shape right up until his death, with claims he was still able to do 900 push-ups and 1000 sit-ups each day.
Paying tribute, former Aussie undisputed lightweight world champion George Kambosos Jr said: “Rest in peace to an absolute Australian boxing legend, Tony Mundine.
“A sad day in Australian sport, some great memories at the old Eveleigh Street boxing gym in Redfern sparring Choc with Tony always in his corner. A great man. My condolences to Anthony and the whole Mundine family.”
Tony won the Australian middleweight title in 1970 after knocking out Billy Choules, and the national heavyweight crown in 1972 with a KO win over Foster Bibron.
He then challenged for the WBA middleweight title four years later — which ended in a seventh-round stoppage defeat to Argentine Carlos Monzon.
He ended his career with a record of 80 wins, 16 losses and one draws — including 64 victories by knockout.
His final win was in 1982 against Dragomir Popovic, with his last bout coming two years later in a unanimous decision defeat to Alex Sua.
Much of his time after his boxing career centred around the career of son Anthony — whose final fight came in 2021.
Tony also ran the Mundine Fight Gyms in Redfern, New South Wales.
