Washington Capitals captain and the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer Alex Ovechkin is facing a headache in Russia over allegedly failing to submit tax returns dating back to 2023.
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is now the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, as he broke the record of 894 goals set in 1999 by the legendary Wayne Gretzky.
Per a report from the Russian tabloid “Mash on Sports”, Ovechkin has been sanctioned by Russia’s Federal Taxation Service (FNS) for allegedly not submitting tax returns dating back to 2023.
The hockey legend forgot about his individual entrepreneur and has not sent declarations since 2023. After that, the tax service systematically blocked all of his accounts: two in 2023, two more in 2024, and one very recently – at the end of July 2025.
Ovechkin has no debts, only problems with the individual entrepreneur. Ovi once sold his merch through it.
Ovechkin is currently in Russia and is scheduled to return to the United States for the start of Capitals Training Camp before too long.

Ovechkin has no shortage of money, as he’s accumulated well over $150 million in earnings throughout his NHL career.
He likely doesn’t have much to worry about, as per a report from Match TV, the issue will be resolved soon.
Ovechkin, who turns 40 next month, is set to enter the final year of his current contract and many believe it could be his last year in the NHL.
