Photos and videos show a massive pyrotechnic performance over the weekend.

Shōgun went out with a bang. 

The popular series had its wrap party in Port Moody over the weekend, astonishing locals with an electrifying pyrotechnic display at the Flavelle Cedar Mill. The waterfront spot served as the filming location for the series’s second season, with a sprawling set built to resemble feudal Japan. 

The wrap party was held on Saturday (Aug. 30), although filming was expected to continue through Sept. 11 (revised date). It’s possible they had the party ahead of completion. 

A light show and live drummers preceded the noisy, sparkly spectacle, which lasted for 10 minutes, according to Hollywood North Buzz.  

Jeff Milani shared a video of the fireworks, with the colourful display reflected in the water below.

“Not sure what’s going on right by the Shōgun set. A big party with lots of music that has been going on for quite some time… and now an endless amount of fireworks. Any idea what’s happening?” they write in a post.

Metro Vancouver filming locations: Shōgun causes a stir 

Some Port Moody residents were less than enthralled by the “surprise” event. While many locals loved the dazzling display, others expressed that they were concerned for pets in the area and people suffering from mental health conditions. 

Jeff McLellan, administrator for the “I Love Port Moody” Facebook group, wrote in a post people should write to city council if they are unhappy about the fireworks. He notes that people and groups need a permit from Port Moody Fire Rescue to use fireworks legally. The permit requires clearance of 30 metres by 30 metres for aerial displays.

“These clearance requirements essentially eliminate residential lots from permit eligibility, which is one of the reasons we rarely have firework displays locally,” he writes.

Putting up a notice advising people that the show was happening may draw a large crowd, creating security issues at the private event, McLellan adds.

Shōgun – Season 2 filming in Metro Vancouver

Shōgun streams on Disney+ and Hulu, and features detailed sets, intricate fight choreography, historical accuracy and elaborate costumes. In short, it’s awesome.

The show filmed scenes for its first season in Port Moody, Belcarra, Coquitlam, Burnaby and North Van’s Princess Park, to name a few. Scenes were also filmed in Ucluelet on Vancouver Island.

The second season continues the larger-than-life, historic saga “of two men from different worlds whose fates are entwined, jumping ahead 10 years as Lord Toranaga strives to become Shōgun, the leader of Japan’s warrior class,” according to Hollywood North Buzz.

The show stars Cosmo Jarvis (Warfare), Hiroyuki Sanada (John Wick: Chapter 4, Westworld) and Anna Sawai (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Pachinko).

Filming for the production commenced in and around Vancouver for the 10-part miniseries in September 2021. The production company, SL5 D, started filming scenes for the second season on Jan. 28 in the Lower Mainland and was expected to wrap filming on Sept. 4, before the date was extended.
