A man has been arrested following a graffiti incident in Golden Ears Provincial Park.
The alleged suspect turned himself into police last week, said Maple Ridge RCMP, and has since been released on a promise to appear in court.
According to witnesses, the rocks along Gold Creek were spray painted with the possible intention of being a memorial for a man who drowned in Gold Creek on Aug. 3.
His fall in the water at the Lower Falls area was witnessed by family and friends, but they were not able to save him.
A social media video of the painted rocks showed a message with a date of Aug. 4 – one day after the man’s death.
Police received a report from the public about the painted rocks on Aug. 17.
The RCMP is cautioning the public to avoid drawing conclusions until all the facts have been fully examined in this case, as, the police force acknowledges there is significant public interest with concerns expressed by residents and park users.
Maple Ridge RCMP said the investigation is still ongoing, with officers continuing to gather evidence, obtain additional information, and prepare reports for potential criminal proceedings.
Police are also working closely with BC Parks staff, who are conducting a parallel investigation under the BC Parks Act.
RCMP are encouraging the public to obey all warning signs in the park and to stay safe and be prepared when using outdoor recreational areas.
Anyone with more information, who has not already been in touch with police, is asked to contact Maple Ridge RCMP at 604-463-6251 and quote file# 2026-15782.
