Showers and cooler temperatures are expected mid-week.
With September starting, fall weather is on its way.
“It’s definitely a dive into September weather for the start of the month here,” says Environment Canada meteorologist Chloe Katsademas.
That’s thanks to a system coming down the coast from Alaska, she adds, which will send Vancouver into a fall-like pattern right as September begins.
“It seems like we’re coming into this fall-type pattern, with more showers expected,” she adds.
Start of the week
Things will start with classic late-summer weather in Vancouver; highs will sit around 21 C Monday and Tuesday afternoons with a mix of sun and cloud.
Overnight lows are expected to drop to the mid-teens.
Low-pressure system
Overnight Tuesday and Wednesday morning will see a shift as a low-pressure system from Alaska hits Vancouver. While it’ll bring cool air and precipitation, it’s not expected to be too dramatic.
Showers are expected overnight, with rainfall through most of Wednesday, though not a significant amount, Katsademas says. At the same time, locals can expect a cooler day with a high of 19 C. Overnight lows will likely remain in the mid-teens.
The system is expected to move on and break up overnight, Katsademas says.
Along with the rain and cloud, those travelling on the Georgia Strait may also see stronger winds, she adds.
Into the weekend
After the system moves on, it’ll take the precipitation with it (for the most part) and leave cooler air in its wake.
“There should be some clearing at some point at the end of the week into the weekend,” Katsademas says.
Thursday and Friday may see some spotty, light showers, with highs staying near 19 C. Overnight lows may be a bit cooler, down to 12 C.
That’ll likely continue into the beginning of the weekend, though there’s some uncertainty as another system is expected at the end of the weekend and beginning of next week. But before the next system arrives, Vancouver could also see some more warming over the weekend, potentially getting to 21 C again.
Right into fall
The pattern for the week ahead is very average for September in Vancouver; the average high for the city is 19 C (compared to 23 C in August) and the average low is 12 C (compared to 15 C in August).
At the same time, September sees a significant uptick in precipitation compared to August, and the week ahead will likely see showers on and off throughout the region, on top of a day of rain on Wednesday.
“That’s the climate normal for September, and it does look like, for the start of the week…. September average seems to be right on schedule,” Katsademas says.
