The win avoided a three-game losing streak for the Red Sox, and it ended their run of losing four of their last five games. Boston is in great shape in the AL Wild Card race as the final month of the season begins. The Red Sox are 75-63 overall and 35-32 at home, which is good enough for the second AL Wild Card slot behind the New York Yankees. The Mariners are trying to pull out of a nose dive and end a five-game losing streak. This slide has been particularly hurtful because Seattle was still in the thick of the AL West playoff race. Now the Mariners are six games back of the first-place Houston Astros with a 64-74 record, and the Mariners are 27-43 on the road. Boston is now the -126 favorite to win this series at home on Tuesday. The Red Sox have yet to announce their starter for tonight’s rematch. The Mariners will start Bryan Woo, who is 9-9 with a 4.36 ERA in 142.1 innings. Boston leads this season series overall 3-1 heading into this penultimate matchup of the season, after winning the first series in Seattle, 2-1, in mid-June.

Trevor Story was the hero in the walk-off, high-scoring win over the Mariners in a 9-8 victory in 10 innings on Monday. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, Story hit an RBI single after two batters were intentionally walked before him. Seattle scored the first run, but Boston retook the lead in the bottom of the first with a homer from Mickey Gasper, and then Jarren Duran hit a two-run shot in the second. But then the Mariners scored seven of the next nine runs to take the 8-5 lead in the seventh. Seattle was fueled by Randy Arozarena, who finished 4-for-5 with a homer, four RBIs, and scored three runs. That streak was capped off with a homer by Cal Raleigh in the seventh. Unfortunately for the Mariners, they weren’t able to score the rest of the way. Story got the Red Sox within a run on a two-run double to left in the eighth, and then the Red Sox forced extras in the ninth on a sac fly to set up more Story heroics.
