ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Union College men’s soccer team kicked off the 2026 season on Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 3-1 match to SUNY Oneonta in a non-conference matchup at Red Dragon Field.
Sophomore Kofi Sarfoh recorded the goal for Union (0-1) on the afternoon, while first-year Joseph Carofano picked up an assist for his first collegiate point in his debut.
Sarfoh got the match – and the season – off to a great start for the Garnet Chargers, as he opened the scoring just 4:50 into the contest. Oneonta (1-0) took six of the next seven shots, but first-year keeper Michael Karcher made four saves to keep the visitors ahead at the halftime whistle.
The Red Dragons continued the offensive pressure into the second half and found the equalizer less than seven minutes into the frame on a goal by Imari Harris, and Oneonta’s Anthony Traube scored 2:45 later to put the home team ahead. Union went back on the offensive after that, recording a pair of shots and earning two corner opportunities, but Oneonta responded with an insurance goal in the 73rd minute to complete the scoring.
Karcher made eight saves to keep Union in the match, as the Red Dragons outshot the Garnet Chargers by a 15-5 margin.
Union will return home for a pair of games this weekend, beginning on Friday with a 6 p.m. match against Clark University at College Park Field.
