A Winnipeg woman is being credited with saving the lives of a father and his child.
Winnipeg police say the woman saved the pair from drowning in the Red River on the evening of Aug. 26.
Police say the woman witnessed the child fall into the Red River near St. John’s Park, followed by the father who was trying to save them.
The woman jumped in and pulled the father from the water, then swam back out to save the child, according to police.
“As she swam backwards to the shoreline with the unconscious child on her chest, she began performing life-saving measures and continued those efforts upon reaching shore,” police said in a news release.
Officers arrived and took over CPR efforts. The child was taken to hospital in critical condition, where they were ultimately stabilized. It’s expected they will make a full recovery.
Authorities did not provide an update on the health of the father.
Winnipeg police say the woman showed “remarkable courage and selflessness” in coming to the aid of complete strangers.
