A Mississauga tow truck driver charged in a collision involving a pedestrian late last year in the city’s east end now faces a more serious charge after the man who was struck died in hospital, police say.
Peel Regional Police Major Collision Bureau investigators looking into the Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025 incident said the 45-year-old man who was hit by the tow truck succumbed to his injuries in hospital some seven months later, on July 29.
The man was struck as he crossed Rathburn Road East near Dixie Road in the city’s east end shortly before 4 p.m., according to police.
Investigators said at the time the man was rushed to a local trauma centre with life-threatening injuries.
Following the man’s death this summer, investigators upgraded the charge against the tow truck driver.
Abner Zuniga, 49, of Mississauga, was charged back in March with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm in relation to the December 2025 collision.
That charge has now been upgraded to dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, police said in a news release issued on Wednesday.

The busy Mississauga intersection was closed for a significant amount of time last Dec. 16 as police investigated the collision.
