Flight delays and cancellations are possible at Toronto Pearson Airport in Mississauga as severe rain and thunderstorms continue to pass through the area, airport officials said on Wednesday afternoon.
Officials at Canada’s biggest and busiest airport said the potential delays and cancellations would impact both flights coming into and taking off from Pearson.
“Air traffic management initiatives are currently in place due to active weather affecting Toronto Pearson and the surrounding area,” the airport said in a post to social media shortly before 4 p.m. on Wednesday. “Delays and cancellations affecting both arrivals and departures are possible. Passengers are encouraged to check their flight status directly with their airline before travelling to the airport.”
Meanwhile, NAV Canada, the not-for-profit organization responsible for air traffic control at Toronto Pearson and other airports across the country, also urged travellers to make sure their flights are still scheduled prior to heading to the airport.
“Weather is causing some delays at (Toronto Pearson Airport). We are ensuring the safe movement of aircraft as quickly as possible,” NAV Canada said in an online notice Wednesday afternoon. “Please check the status of your flight with your airline.”
Earlier on Wednesday, Environment and Climate Change Canada, also known as Environment Canada, urged caution among southern Ontario residents as perhaps the strongest storms of the year descended on the region.
“The thunderstorm environment today continues to show the potential to be one of the strongest this year, although the current cloud cover may inhibit that potential,” forecasters with the national agency said. “Damaging winds, large hail, tornadoes and torrential downpours are all possible. The strongest thunderstorms are most likely mid-to-late afternoon and early evening.”
