Coalition Avenir Québec Leader and Premier Christine Fréchette is hitting pause on her election campaign, opting to take time away from the trail to respond to the U.S.-Canada trade war.
A person with knowledge of Fréchette’s plans confirmed to The Gazette that the premier will not campaign Monday, instead assembling her cabinet to discuss the tariff war in a virtual meeting. Fréchette’s activities are also on hold Sunday, with deputy premier Ian Lafrenière campaigning in her place.
On Tuesday, Ottawa is set to impose counter-tariffs of up to 50 per cent on U.S. imports, in response to the 50 per cent tariffs imposed on Canadian exports in late August.
