A New Bern counselor has been selected to present original research at the 25th Anniversary World Congress of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy in Chicago.
Sherwood Miller Harrison III, a professional counselor and licensed skydiver, will present at the conference, which is scheduled for Sept. 23-26.
Harrison’s presentation is titled “The Drop Zone as Existential Crucible: Logotherapy, the Will to Meaning, and the Human Search for Hope.”
According to Monte Cristo Counseling PLLC, the research explores how skydiving, described as a voluntary confrontation with fear, freedom, and finitude, can become a powerful act of meaning-making.
This research looks at how people discover meaning when they willingly step into uncertainty,” Harrison said. “Skydiving offers a vivid, embodied way to understand hope, responsibility, and the human drive to make life matter.
Harrison’s research draws from narrative accounts of licensed skydivers and his own experience as an advanced-licensed skydiver. His presentation examines how Viktor Frankl’s concepts come alive at 14,000 feet, according to the counseling practice.
Harrison has practiced counseling since 2009 and provides outpatient telehealth services across North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Texas. He specializes in cognitive-behavioral therapy.
