One Saskatchewan golfer makes cut at Canadian men’s senior golf championship

Saskatchewan finished ninth in the Inter-Provincial Team competition at the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship at Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg.

Saskatchewan finished ninth in the Inter-Provincial Team competition at the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship at Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg.

The Saskatchewan team finished at 27-over par, 23 shots behind Team Manitoba, which captured the title for the first time after shooting a combined one-over on Wednesday to finish four-over for the championship.

Manitoba’s team featured David White, Todd Fanning and Jay Doyle, all from Winnipeg. Defending champion Ontario finished second at nine-over, with British Columbia third at 10-over.

Individually, Regina’s Ken Rodgers was the only Saskatchewan golfer to make the cut, carding back-to-back 78s for a 12-over 156 and a tie for 62nd. Weyburn’s Rick Hallberg and Lloydminster’s Jim Born both finished at 13-over, while Saskatoon’s Scott Allan was 14-over and Brad Phelps 15-over.

The battle for the John Rankin Memorial Trophy as Senior champion is now a three-way tie.

Manitoba’s David White is joined at one-under by Todd Wiseman of Port Moody, B.C., and Bryan Hoops of Tempe, Arizona, after both fired three-under 69s on Wednesday as they head into rounds three on Thursday and Friday.
