With 17 candidates vying to become the new Ward 7 councillor in Mississauga, residents will have an opportunity to see and hear from many of those seeking the position at an all-candidates meeting being held on Monday night.
With the current councillor, Dipika Damerla, entered in the mayoral race, that means a new face will join City of Mississauga council as Ward 7 representative for the next term, which begins following the Oct. 26 Ontario municipal election.
Those organizing the upcoming candidates meeting said on Friday 10 of the 17 hopefuls seeking to succeed Damerla have so far confirmed their attendance.
The event is being held on Sept. 14 from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Cooksville Branch #582 (456 Hensall Circle, just west of Cawthra Road and Dundas Street East).
Largest election race in the city
Organizers say the large field of Ward 7 candidates — the 17 entrants are the most in any of the city’s municipal election races — makes it even more important for residents to get a sense of what each person is promising to bring to the position.
“This meeting will provide Ward 7 residents with an opportunity to meet the candidates in person, learn more about their platforms and ask questions about key issues” affecting both the ward and Mississauga, organizers said.
Organizers of the candidates meeting describe themselves as “a group of active community members and Ward 7 residents.”
Ward 7 includes the south-central part of Mississauga and is anchored by Cooksville.

75 candidates are running for council seats
In total, 75 candidates — among them nine incumbents — are vying for city council seats in Mississauga’s 11 wards as voters prepare to cast their ballots on Oct. 26.
The 14-candidate mayoral race in Mississauga features four high-profile hopefuls — the current mayor, Carolyn Parrish, her predecessor, Bonnie Crombie, Ward 2 Coun. Alvin Tedjo and Damerla.
The Ward 2 race also features 14 candidates competing for the seat. That ward is comprised of areas in the city’s southwest that include the neighbourhoods of Clarkson and Lorne Park.
Ward 5, which includes the Malton area and is historically among the most hotly contested races in the city during election years, offers 10 candidates from which to choose, including incumbent Natalie Hart.
