Brampton is honouring local soccer star Cycle Larin after contributing to a record-breaking performance at this year’s World Cup.

Larin gained the nickname “The Brampton Bagsman” for his teammates while playing at English club Southampton, and was one of several members of Canada’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad. He scored the tying goal in Canada’s 1-1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto during the tournament, and also opened the scoring in Canada’s record-breaking 6-0 win over Qatar.

The city is already planning to name a soccer field after Larin, and now says it will be presenting the Brampton forward with a Key to the City.

Brampton will be awarding the key to Larin later this month “in recognition of his international career and achievements as one of Canada’s leading all-time scorers.”

Members of the public are invited to the event, but registration is required as space is limited.

“The first 250 Brampton residents ages 4 to 12 will receive a special gift at the event,” the city says.

The event is scheduled for Sept. 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Brampton City Hall.

Brampton natives make up a bulk of Canada’s World Cup Team, including Larin, Tajon Buchanan, Jonathan Osorio, Promise David and Jayden Nelson, was named to Canada’s roster to replace injured midfielder Marcelo Flores.
