Embry-Riddle dropped a tightly contested Great Southwest Athletic Conference match to Benedictine Mesa, 2-1, Saturday at home.

The Eagles created several early opportunities, including a shot off the post by Christopher Cruz in the 18th minute. Cruz was awarded a penalty kick later in the half, but Benedictine goalkeeper Charlie Shepherd made the save to keep the match scoreless.

Benedictine took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute when Pol Bistue found the back of the net. Embry-Riddle responded just 35 seconds into the second half, as Cesar Battistini scored off assists from Erick Quirarte and Rodrigo Garcia to level the match at 1-1.

The Eagles continued to pressure the Redhawks and finished with a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Embry-Riddle goalkeeper Sam Macdonald also recorded three saves to keep ERAU within striking distance.

Benedictine regained the lead in the 84th minute when Bryan Ncube scored the eventual game-winning goal. Embry-Riddle pushed forward late, but Shepherd turned aside a final header from Kevin Yamna in the 89th minute to preserve the Redhawks’ victory.

Embry-Riddle finished with eight shots, including four on goal, while Benedictine recorded 16 shots and five shots on target.

ERAU will continue GSAC play on Tuesday as the Eagles host La Sierra for a 7:30pm kickoff.
