Winnipeggers may soon see an increased police presence on their nights out as Winnipeg police (WPS) is set to ramp up patrolling in bars and other licensed businesses.
In a press release Tuesday, WPS said its offices will conduct walkthroughs and proactive patrolling in the coming months to identify and remove those who pose a risk of violence.
“Removal efforts will strategically target gang members and individuals involved in or associated with organized crime, with priority given to those who pose the greatest risk to public safety,” WPS said.
The Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Control Act provides police the authority to remove people suspected to be or involved in violence. The law also allows business owners to refuse entry to gang members. Police officers could fine or arrest those do not comply.
WPS said it was working with bar and lounge operators to educate them about enforcement of the law intended to reduce gang activity.
