Jeff Teat is the FireWolves newest lacrosse star after Oshawa chose him with the first pick in the NLL dispersal draft
The biggest non-secret in lacrosse is no secret any more after the Oshawa FireWolves chose star forward Jeff Teat as their first pick in Tuesday’s dispersal draft of the Ottawa Black Bears and Philadelphia Wings.
Jeff Teat, who served as captain of the Ottawa franchise, produced 44 goals and 115 points last season, good for fourth in league scoring. He is also the fastest player in National Lacrosse League history to reach 600 career points.
“The opportunity to get a player of Jeff’s calibre is very special for our organization,” said Oshawa coach and general manager Glenn Clark. “We’re really excited to add Jeff to our core and have this group take the next step towards a championship.”
The National Lacrosse League announced last week that the Ottawa Black Bears and the Philadelphia Wings have both “discontinued operations” and will not participate in the 2026-27 season, with Oshawa first up in the dispersal draft.
To the surprise of no one, Oshawa picked Teat with the first selection.
The 29-year-old lefty from Brampton has an impressive list of accolades across junior, collegiate, professional, and international competition.
He was MVP of Ontario Junior A lacrosse in 2016 and 2017, a three-time All-American at Cornell University, 2022 NLL Rookie of the Year, two-time First Team all-star and three-time Second Team all-star. In Premier Lacrosse he was the 2021 Rookie of the Year, is a four-time all-star, was named 2024 PLL MVP, won the 2025 PLL Championship, and was named MVP of the 2025 championship game.
Internationally, he has competed for Canada in the World Lacrosse Field Championships, World Lacrosse Box Championships, and World Games. He won the 2024 World Box Lacrosse Championship with Team Canada.
Known for his cerebral style of play, Teat is expected to elevate the FireWolves offense with his elite goal scoring and playmaking ability. He has scored 108 points or more in all five of his NLL seasons with a career high of 136 in 2023. He served as captain with the Black Bears and Clark believes he will bring his leadership and work ethic to Oshawa.

“The FireWolves are excited for an exceptional player like Jeff Teat to join the team as it prepares for its second season in Oshawa and for a push to the playoffs,” he said.
With their second pick in the dispersal Oshawa selected forward Connr Kearnan, a Courtice native and teammate of Teat on the Black Bears. Kearnan also plays for Brooklin in Major Series lacrosse.
NThe NLL will now move forward with 12 active member clubs as it prepares for its 40th anniversary season, with league commissioner Brett Frood saying the decision to suspend operations for the two clubs came after efforts to identify viable paths forward for both franchises.
Frood said the league evaluates the long-term sustainability of its member clubs across several core areas, including committed ownership, venue and lease conditions, local market infrastructure, operational capabilities and sustained investment in the fan experience.
NLL Free Agency will begin on Friday and the 2026 NLL Entry Draft will take place at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday, September 24.
