A girl under the age of 18 is in custody after a woman in her late 80s was stabbed in a Scarborough home on Friday, Toronto police say.
The stabbing happened in a residence in the area of McCowan Road and Sheppard Avenue E. Officers were called to the home for a report of a stabbing at about 1:40 p.m.
When officers arrived, they found the woman suffering from significant injuries. She was taken to hospital, where she remains in life-threatening condition.
Acting Insp. Brian Maslowski, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service, told reporters near the scene that the girl was arrested a short distance from the home without incident.
Both suspect and victim lived in the residence, but he declined to comment on the nature of their relationship.
“We are not looking for any additional suspects,” Maslowski said.
“It’s very tragic and our thoughts go out to the family. I can’t even imagine the heartbreak dealing with such a significant incident.”
Anyone with information is urged to come forward to police.
