A Centurion tank was back to flatten a some vehicles at the Cloverdale Legion Sept. 12.
After a successful even int 2025, the Centurion turned six different vehicles into steel pancakes—to the delight and curiosity of onlookers.
National Legion Week runs Sept. 20-26 in Canada, so the Cloverdale Legion, Branch No. 6, decided to run an event to celebrate the week a little early. This allowed the Legion to partner with Cloverdale Market Days—which held their last market of the year on the daem day—to put on the event.
Scott MacMillan, Branch No. 6 past president, said hundreds watched the 50-ton Centurion crush cars, SUVs, and a van at different intervals. He estimated about 2,500 people passed by and through the Cloverdale Legion over the course of the day.
MacMillan said the day was “great” and he was surprised that “a whole whack of people” came out to watch. This was year two of the return of tank crushing after an event last September broke a six-or-more year hiatus from past tank-crushing spectacles.
“Everyone wanted to climb on a tank after [each tank crushing event].”
He said some people had a hard time seeing the tank flatten the cars as there were so many attendees. Next year, he may bring in some bleachers for better viewing.
Legion Week is a national event designed to educate and inform the public about the work the Royal Canadian Legion does to support both veterans and their families. The event also highlights the philanthropic outreach Legions do in their local communities. National Legion Week also educates the public about Remembrance Day and they also use the event to solicit new members.
“It’s about letting the people in the community know that we look after our vets and donate a lot back to the community,” MacMillan said. “Everything we do is for the vets and the community. So this is just one way of saying ‘thank you’ to everyone.”
MacMillan added his organizing committee will start planning next year’s event very soon.
