A 31-year-old Calgary man faces charges after police recovered 17 stolen 3D printers that the victim of a break-in spotted for sale online.
Calgary police say someone broke into a home in the city’s northwest Varsity neighbourhood sometime between June 13 and 15. The thief took 20 3D printers and accessories worth more than $20,000, police say.
Days later, the homeowner saw many of the items listed for sale online, recognizing them by unique markings. The victim then contacted police instead of confronting the seller.
On Aug. 18, officers searched a home in the Dalhousie neighbourhood of northwest Calgary. They found 17 3D printers, and six spools of printer filament.
Brent Kuzma, 31, of Calgary, is charged with one count of trafficking in stolen goods over $5,000, one count of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and two counts of failing to comply with release orders. The charges have not been tested in court.
“This is a good reminder that if you locate your stolen items online, to alert the police and don’t confront anyone yourself,” said Insp. Colleen Bowers of CPS District 7. “It’s also a reminder for buyers to authenticate the origin of items purchased online.”
Kuzma was scheduled to appear in court Monday.
In Medicine Hat, police have run an in-person internet transaction zone outside the station since 2017. Police recommend to always use a designated zone, especially if unsure about an online purchase or sale. The MHPS location is lit and under 24/7 video surveillance.
