Maple Ridge cub featured in Critter Care sponsorship program

The little bear cub that was found orphaned in downtown Maple Ridge is a big eater at the Critter Care Wildlife Society, and Radar is part of a back-to-school promotion seeking donations.

The Langley-based facility, which rears and rehabilitates injured and orphaned wildlife, took Radar in during April.

The tiny, eight-pound male had been bawling for its mother. It was going onto people’s porches, and was seen following a person down the road. Residents in the neighbourhood of Lougheed Highway and 116th Avenue were concerned, and posting about the situation in social media. He was too small to survive without his mother in the wild.

He is now thriving. He gained five pounds in his first two weeks at his new home.

“From a tiny cub to the biggest bear in our care, Radar has certainly changed,” said the society in social media. “He is usually the first one out when he catches the smell of food, and he loves exploring and playing with enrichment.”

Radar will remain at Critter Care through the winter, continuing to grow, learn, and build strength. If all goes according to plan, he will return to the wild late in the spring of 2027.

He is one of the bears featured in Critter Care’s Back to School sponsorship program. By sponsoring Radar, donors are helping provide the food, care, and rehabilitation young wildlife need as they grow stronger and prepare for life back in the wild.

Sponsor Radar or another Critter Care animal before Sept. 30 to participate in the program.
