The Great Outdoors Comedy Festival was supposed to bring three days of major comedy acts to Mississauga’s Erindale Park last weekend, but the event was postponed just days before it was scheduled to begin, and ticket holders are still waiting for a clearer explanation of what happened.
The festival was scheduled for Sept. 11 to 13, with John Mulaney, Hasan Minhaj, Ronny Chieng and several other comedians among the performers announced for the inaugural Mississauga event.
Instead, organizers announced on Sept. 8 that the festival would not go ahead as planned.
The City of Mississauga says the decision was made by festival organizers and that the municipality has no additional information about why the event was postponed.
“The Great Outdoors Comedy Festival decided to postpone this weekend’s event in Mississauga. Please reach out to them for more information,” a city spokesperson told INsauga.com. “The city will continue to work with the festival organizers on next steps. We have no further information to share at this time.”
INsauga.com reached out to festival organizers twice for more information about the decision, including questions about the reason for the postponement, a potential new date and the status of ticket refunds, but did not receive a response.
The city’s response also suggests the decision was not made by the municipality, despite the significant preparations that had already been made for the event at Erindale Park.
Mississauga had announced temporary park restrictions beginning Sept. 6 and continuing through Sept. 16 to allow for event setup, operations and teardown. Parking lots were to be closed, the main festival area fenced off, and portions of the park affected by the event. The city had also been preparing for thousands of people to attend the festival.
The postponement was first made public locally by Ward 7 Coun. Dipika Damerla, who posted about the decision on social media after the information had begun circulating at City Hall.

Damerla later told INsauga.com she did not have additional details about why the festival was postponed, but felt it was important for residents and ticket holders to know about the change as soon as possible.
Her post came before festival organizers had provided much public detail beyond their brief postponement announcement.
The festival’s official statement described the decision as a postponement rather than a cancellation.
“We are sorry to share that the Great Outdoors Comedy Festival in Mississauga will not be happening as planned,” organizers said.
They added the decision followed “careful consideration,” saying their priority was to deliver “the best possible festival” and that they were exploring new dates.
Organizers said ticket purchasers would be contacted directly with further information.
That leaves an important distinction for people who bought tickets.
The festival’s published refund policy says tickets are final sale and generally cannot be refunded or exchanged. If an event is rescheduled, the policy says tickets remain valid for the new date, and ticket holders do not need to take action.
The policy does provide for automatic refunds in certain circumstances if an event is cancelled because of extreme weather and is not rescheduled. It also addresses partial cancellations of multi-day passes, with proportional refunds available when at least 75 per cent of the scheduled shows are cancelled.
Because the Mississauga event has been described as postponed, rather than cancelled, the organizers have not announced a general refund process.
That has left some ticket buyers turning to social media for information. Individual ticket holders have reported they did not receive an email from the festival and instead learned about the postponement through social media or news reports. Others have discussed attempting credit-card chargebacks, although those reports are anecdotal and do not establish how the festival is handling refunds generally.
The uncertainty comes after a series of changes to the festival’s Mississauga lineup.
In late August, organizers announced that Nick Kroll and Mike Birbiglia would no longer perform, citing scheduling conflicts. They were replaced by Stavros Halkias and Saturday Night Live cast member James Austin Johnson. Public lineup tracking also showed changes involving Fred Armisen shortly before the scheduled opening.
The changes were not identified by organizers as being connected to the eventual postponement. There has also been online speculation from ticket buyers about attendance, ticket sales and event logistics, but there is no public confirmation from the organizers or the city that any of those factors played a role in the decision to postpone the festival.
Mulaney, one of the biggest names attached to the Mississauga comedy weekend, also made clear that the decision did not come from him.
In a statement to fans, Mulaney said the decision was not his and that the festival producers had made the decision not to move forward. He also indicated that he intended to perform in the area in the future.
For now, the status of the Mississauga festival remains unresolved.
Organizers say they are exploring new dates, while the city says it will continue working with the festival on next steps. No replacement dates have been announced, and there has been no detailed public explanation for why the event was postponed so close to its scheduled opening.
For ticket holders, the immediate question is whether the Mississauga festival will eventually return on a new date and, if it does, whether the new event will feature the same lineup.
Until organizers provide further information, tickets remain subject to the festival’s existing terms, which state that tickets for a rescheduled event remain valid.
The City of Mississauga has indicated it will continue working with the organizers, but for now the festival itself remains responsible for providing ticket holders with details about what comes next.
