A Cochranite caught a pretty wild moment on camera this week when a black bear went sprinting through his neighbourhood.

Joshua Osmond posted the security footage to Facebook, showing the bear cruising along the west end of Glen Boles Trail in West Pointe.

The wildest part? A woman sitting on some nearby rocks in a green jacket had no clue the animal was booking it right behind her.

“Caught this black bear on our security camera yesterday around noon,” Osmond posted. “And yes… there’s a lady sitting on the rocks in the green jacket who had absolutely NO idea a black bear just ran right behind her.”

Osmond said he wanted to share the clip so local folks could keep their heads on a swivel.

“Figured I’d share so everyone in the area is aware and keeps an eye out, especially if you’re walking the trails with kids or dogs!” he wrote. “Stay safe out there, Cochrane!”

Moments like this are a good reminder that we share the area with plenty of wildlife.

If you are heading out on the local trails, it is always a good idea to bring bear spray somewhere easy to grab and make a bit of noise so you do not surprise anything.

Keeping dogs on a leash is another big one, since off-leash pets can easily spook a bear or bring one back your way.

Around the house, keeping trash bins locked up until pickup morning and taking down bird feeders can help keep uninvited visitors from wandering into the yard.
