A man faces dozens of charges after 71 vehicles were broken into in Mississauga earlier this month, resulting in “significant property damage and financial losses for residents,” police say.

“The incidents occurred during the early morning hours of Sept. 3 and Sept. 6, and targeted neighbourhoods throughout Mississauga,” Peel Regional Police said on Thursday.

Investigators said the nearly six dozen vehicles were targeted by a culprit who either smashed car windows or entered through unlocked doors before stealing valuables.

“While no vehicles were stolen and all vehicles were unoccupied at the time, the incidents resulted in significant property damage and financial losses for residents,” police said in a news release.

Subsequent investigation by officers with the Peel police 11 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau led to the arrest of a suspect.

Detectives have also identified “potential connections to similar vehicle crime investigations being conducted in Halton Region, Toronto, York Region and Waterloo Region,” police said, adding Peel investigators are working closely with their counterparts across the Greater Toronto Area “to determine the full scope of the accused’s alleged activities.”

Cory Lowden, 34, of no fixed address, is charged with:

Attempt to commit an indictable offence — 46 counts.
Theft under $5,000 — 16 counts.
Mischief over $5,000 — 15 counts.
Theft over $5,000.

He was also arrested for two outstanding warrants related to separate fraud investigations, police noted, adding the accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

The investigation continues.
