Flower City Songwriters will bring a summer of community music-making into the open air on September 24, giving Brampton listeners a free evening of original work at Historic Bovaird House. The concert offers a chance to hear what local writers and musicians have been developing together, with nearly a week to plan a visit.
The outdoor gathering runs from 7 to 9 p.m. at Historic Bovaird House, 563 Bovaird Drive East. It forms part of Culture Days, the arts celebration running from September 18 to October 4.
Flower City Songwriters share a summer’s work
According to the City’s event announcement, First Nations singer-songwriter Pamela Levi, from Elsipogtog First Nation, has been leading an interactive songwriting circle at the Pendergast Log Cabin. The September concert brings the resulting work to an audience on the grounds of the neighbouring historic house.
That connection gives the evening its local interest: the performance grows out of people meeting to write and create together over the summer. For listeners, it is an opportunity to encounter the work produced by that community process, rather than simply choose a show from a touring schedule.
The organiser’s booking page lists Cynthia Joan, Adam Brox and Jonathan Cassin in the lineup. Levi is also featured in the concert description. The City’s biography of Levi describes three independently recorded albums and work as an audio engineer and supporting artist in her family’s recording studio. It also notes her experience hosting songwriting circles with musicians including David Myles, Naomi Shobha, Lucie Idlout and Dave West.
