HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 2 Marshall Men’s Soccer team (1-0-0) opened its 2025 campaign with a 2-1 win over George Mason (0-1-0) on Friday night at Hoops Family Field.

Head Coach Chris Grassie earned his 200th career win in the season-opening triumph.

“We have such a good team with depth in every position,” Grassie said about his team after the match. “It’s really coin flip at times as to who will be playing. We talk about guys who are going to open the game and guys who are going to close the game. It doesn’t matter if you’re not starting, everyone has a great role on this team.”

After a relatively quiet first 29 minutes of the match offensively from both sides, The Herd set up for a corner kick in the 30th minute. Yasha Scharer sent in the corner and found the head of Larry Noel as he headed it home for his first goal with MU. Scharer also registered his first point with the Green and White on the assists.

Marshall doubled the lead with just over three minutes left before halftime as Joao Roberto threaded a pass to David de la Vibora, who converted for his first goal with The Herd at the 41:50 mark. The referee checked for a potential offside on VAR, but the goal stood as MU led 2-0.

Goalkeeper Dan Rose then came up with a huge save on a header by Will Carson off a corner at the 42:56 mark to keep the 2-0 advantage at halftime.

Out of halftime, the Patriots got on the board with a Herd own goal in the 47th minute to make it 2-1.

Marshall’s defense held stout the rest of the way holding GMU to just one shot that was blocked in the 60th minute as it held on for the win in the season opener.

MU outshot the visitors 16-5, including 6-1 in shots on goal, in front of a crowd of 2,000-plus at Hoops Family Field.
