BRISTOL, Tenn. — Ryan Blaney went looking for a conversation. Carson Hocevar gave him two right fists to the jaw instead.
After Joey Logano stole Saturday night’s Bass Pro Shops Night Race, Blaney walked down pit road, grabbed Hocevar by the firesuit, and shoved him. The 6-foot-4 Hocevar answered immediately: two overhand rights to Blaney’s face. The first knocked the 2023 champion’s hat off. The second caught him on the left cheek and put him on the pavement.

Blaney got up with a bruised, cut left eye and charged again. He threw a wild left that knocked Hocevar’s hat off before crews and officials dragged them apart. Hocevar raised his arms to the grandstands. The Last Great Colosseum roared.

That was the first time anyone had actually gone after Hocevar after months of threats. It did not go the way the veteran hoped.
“Something is going to happen”
The fight was born on Lap 457.
Blaney had just taken second from Hocevar after leading a race-high 202 laps. Hocevar had a run off Turn 4 and crossed under him into Turn 1. Blaney dropped to protect the bottom. Hocevar did not lift. Contact to the left rear spun the No. 12 Team Penske Ford into the wall. Blaney was done — 33rd, last among Chase drivers, dropped to sixth in the standings and 52 points behind the lead.

He was already boiling. A pit-road penalty with just over 100 laps left had dumped him into traffic after he dominated the middle of the race. The wreck ended the comeback.
Outside the infield care center, before the checkered flag even flew, Blaney was asked if he planned to talk to Hocevar.
“Yeah, something’s going to happen.”
He waited. Logano did burnouts. Hocevar parked the No. 77 after finishing third. Then Blaney came through the crowd fast enough that Hocevar later said he knew it was not going to be a conversation.
“I saw him and I was like, ‘OK, he’s moving pretty fast for a convo and then he grabbed me,’” Hocevar told reporters. “And I was like, I’m not going to wait. I’ve seen enough of these. I’m just going to start swinging and see what happens.”
He did. Two rights. Blaney down. Then the second wave, more shoving, one punch back from Blaney, and a pile of crew members in the middle.
“That was the first time I ever hit anybody,” Hocevar said. “It’s a cool story. At least that’s gonna be at Bristol of all places.”
Two versions of the same corner
Blaney’s account of the wreck was blunt.
“We got clear off of there, off of four, and I tried to protect the bottom, and he crossed and never lifted and I got crashed,” he said. “I left him plenty of room for a lap before that. I didn’t chop him. I didn’t run him into the fence or nothing like I easily could have.”
Asked who was at fault: “Oh, I don’t f—ing know. I got crashed. Each person is going to say they did nothing wrong.”
Hocevar did not take the blame.
“I wasn’t trying to wreck him. It just looked like to me I got a run and kind of went left and he spun. I spun him,” he said. “There wasn’t a whole lot of talking. He just kind of said one thing and then went after me, and I wasn’t going to take it.”
Then the line that will follow both of them to Kansas:
“That was for second, and he wants to come fight. They got an old-school Bristol show here.”
Hocevar later added that he understood the temperature. “That’s probably his championship, so I understand 100 percent. I’d probably be mad, too.”

Hocevar had reason to be hot at someone else. With eight laps left he and Ty Gibbs were rubbing for the win. Gibbs moved him. Logano drove by both of them and won. Hocevar still finished third. Gibbs was fifth.
That is the part that made Blaney’s approach land even worse with Hocevar. He had just lost a chance to win the Night Race and then a driver who had been racing him for second walked up and put hands on him.
“I got ran into a lot for the win,” Hocevar said. “I don’t think anybody’s left behind me. So they got an old-school Bristol show here. I was going to play the audience for a second.”
The audience played along. Fans at the fence cheered Hocevar after the scrap and booed Logano during the burnout. Bristol got the night it advertises.
What happens next
NASCAR typically reviews post-race fights on Tuesday. The series has generally let drivers swing as long as crew members stay out of it. Spire owner Jeff Dickerson did not expect a penalty. “We’re just surprised he can fight,” Dickerson said. “What’s he going to get penalized for? I think the drivers can fight.”
Hocevar agreed, in his own way: “I would have to think not, because I kind of got to defend myself at some point. I think we’d lose ticket sales if we did.”
Blaney leaves Bristol with a cut eye, a ruined Chase night, and the knowledge that he started the grab and still took the worse of the exchange. Hocevar leaves with a podium, a viral two-punch combination, and the same reputation he brought in — only now someone finally tried him, and he did not back up.
Kansas is next Sunday. They will share a racetrack again. After Saturday night, nobody needs a translator for what that means.
