The Brampton Steelheads opened their season with two losses, following Friday’s narrow home defeat with a 4–1 setback in Niagara on Saturday. Keaton Ardagh scored in both games, providing an early bright spot for Brampton’s Ontario Hockey League club.
Saturday’s result left the Steelheads looking for their first win after Oshawa had edged them 3–2 in the home opener. The two games presented different problems: Brampton surrendered a third-period lead against the Generals, then spent most of the Niagara contest trying to erase a deficit.
Brampton Steelheads cannot complete Niagara comeback
According to the team’s September 19 recap, Niagara led 2–0 after goals from Callum Cheynowski and Reyth Smith. Ardagh cut that advantage in half 1:29 into the third period, with Carter Hicks and Geno Carcone assisting.
Smith scored again before Layne Gallacher added Niagara’s fourth. Brampton finished ahead 28–25 in shots and killed all five Niagara power plays, but went scoreless on its own lone opportunity. The successful penalty killing kept one problem in check; it did not provide enough offence to change the result.
Home opener slipped away late
Friday offered a closer finish. The September 18 home-opener report describes a scoreless first period before Ardagh put Brampton ahead at 9:21 of the second. Nathan Amidovski and Matej Stankoven received the assists.
Oshawa tied the game before Lucas DeMiglio restored Brampton’s lead 2:07 into the third. Stankoven assisted again. The Generals responded with an equalizer, and a five-minute Brampton power play passed without a goal.
Kane Cloutier then scored the winner with less than three minutes remaining. Both teams finished with 30 shots. Ardagh and DeMiglio were named the second and third stars, respectively, behind Cloutier.
A new captain for the season
The opening weekend also marked a leadership change for the Brampton Steelheads. In a September 18 announcement, the club named forward Troy Patton captain, with Reed Gee, MacGregor Richmond, Kieran Witkowski and Hicks serving as alternates.
Patton entered the season with 31 points in 101 OHL games after being selected 34th overall in the 2024 draft. He had already worn an alternate captain’s letter during the latter part of last season.
Gee and Richmond had also been appointed alternates in January. Gee, a defenceman drafted by Flint, entered his final OHL season as an over-age player. Richmond was a sixth-round Steelheads selection in 2022 and has spent his OHL career with the organisation.
The group includes returning scoring experience: Witkowski led Brampton with 34 points in 62 games last season. Hicks, who arrived from Windsor in January, brings another returning voice on defence. Their first task is immediate: helping a young season turn from close stretches of play into results.
