Friday night’s game between the Ottawa Redblacks and Edmonton Elks was paused late in the fourth quarter after a potentially serious injury to Daniel Okpoko.

After the defensive lineman made a tackle on Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo from behind, bringing both to the ground, Okpoko got to his feet before quickly signalling for help and collapsing back down.

Okpoko, 25, received treatment on the field from Ottawa’s training staff before being stretchered off and taken away in an ambulance.

The Saskatoon native has recorded 15 tackles and one sack over 29 career CFL games with the Redblacks. He has appeared in 11 games this season, his second in the league.

Following their 30-20 loss to the Elks, the Redblacks provided an update on social media that Okpoko “is responsive and has movement in all extremities. He has been taken to hospital for further evaluation.”
