Vandals hit the wrong target when they smashed the windows and scrawled “burn the data centres” at the headquarters of Mila, Montreal’s flagship AI institute, one night last week.
The people who defaced Mila’s building were probably looking to send a message on the eve of All In, a major tech summit at the Palais des congrès, amid heightened global warnings that the dizzying speed of AI development is moving so fast that humans may soon lose control.
The past few weeks have been rife with alarming disclosures about AI going rogue during testing and malevolent actors being thwarted from possible attempts to get it to cook up new bioweapons.
