Surrey Councillor Rob Stutt is calling on the provincial government to develop a comprehensive plan to regulate E-scooters B.C.-wide.
During the September 21 council meeting Stutt remarked that safety concerns involving electric scooters are “considerable” and need to be addressed.
He asked city staff to draft a letter for the mayor to send to the provincial government asking it to establish a “clear, consistent regulatory framework” governing the use of E-scooters throughout B.C.
“While E-scooters are currently not permitted on Surrey’s public roads and sidewalks they are increasingly being used in our community,” he noted. “Rather than simply trying to prohibit their use, we should be asking the Province to provide municipalities with the tools and regulations needed to manage scooters safely and consistently.”
Stutt wants a standardized policy set up on where E-scooters can operate, safety requirements, enforcement, speed limits, equipment standards and insurance, “so communities like Surrey can respond to the reality of E-scooter use while keeping public safety in the forefront.”
