Former Wildcat and current Atlanta Dream guard Rhyne Howard made her 129th 3-pointer of the season, setting the WNBA single-season record in the team’s 103-59 win over the Connecticut Sun.
Howard entered the game tied with New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu’s record of 128 triples set in 2023.
The Tennessee native finally sank her tiebreaker on her ninth attempt of the game to break Ionescu’s record, marking her only 3-pointer of the game.
Over the summer she also became the fastest player in league history to reach 400 made three-pointers.
Howard’s record-breaking shot comes in an already impressive week for her, as days before the guard won a gold medal with Team USA at the FIBA Women’s World Cup in Germany.
She is also on the verge of breaking yet another record for most steals in a WNBA season, needing just five to pass Teresa Weatherspoon.
In her time with Kentucky, Howard was selected No. 1 overall in the 2022 WNBA Draft, becoming Kentucky women’s basketball’s first-ever top selection.
In 114 career games, she led the Wildcats in scoring 19 times, rebounding 15 times, assists 11 times, steals 19 times, blocks 14 times and had 10 season double-doubles.
Howard ranks second in school history in career scoring average at 20.1, first in career 3-pointers made with 284, fourth in career 3-point field-goal percentage at 38.2 and is fourth in program history in steals per game at 2.298.
The guard scored her 2,000th career-point in a game against Vanderbilt, becoming just the third Wildcat in school history to record 2,000 or more points in 100 games or less.
Concluding her Wildcat career, Howard scored 2,290 career points, making her second in UK history in points scored.
