“For driving lasting change in public policy and empowering people with disabilities throughout Canada and beyond,” Surrey resident Stephanie Cadieux is among Order of British Columbia recipients this year.

Her name and a dozen others were announced by the B.C. government Sept. 22, two days before appointees are invested at a ceremony at Government House in Victoria.

In Surrey, Cadieux was MLA in three different ridings for 13 years before she resigned in South Surrey in April 2022 to become Canada’s first Chief Accessibility Officer. She has used a wheelchair since she age 18, and has long been an advocate for diversity, accessibility and disability inclusion.

The 11 other Order of B.C. recipients for 2026 are Selen Alpay (a Prince George resident), Gail S. Anderson (Langley), Marc Bains (Vancouver), Robert Bauman, KC (Vancouver), Jill Bodkin (Vancouver), Dr. Jim Christenson (Vancouver), Bristol Foster, PhD (Salt Spring Island), Marianne Ignace (Savona), Patrick Kelly (Victoria), Elio Luongo (Burnaby) and Vittorio Montagliani (West Vancouver). Their bios are on news.gov.bc.ca.

The Order of British Columbia recognizes people who have served “with the greatest distinction and excelled in any field of endeavour benefiting the people of British Columbia or elsewhere. The Order represents the highest form of recognition the Province can bestow on its people. Appointees become members for the rest of their lives.”
