The City of White Rock has recognized longtime school trustee Laurae McNally for her 46 years of service to students, teachers and schools in the community.

At the White Rock city council meeting on Sept. 21, Mayor Megan Knight opened the meeting by recognizing McNally, who is stepping away and not seeking re-election as the White Rock school trustee this year.

“I wanted to begin this meeting by taking a moment to recognize someone who’s had an extraordinary impact on White Rock’s school community,” Knight said at the meeting.

McNally was first elected to the Surrey Board of Education in 1980 and has served as a trustee for four decades.

“Throughout those years she’s been a fierce advocate for White Rock schools, championing music programs, learning centres and sports opportunities for students,” shared Knight.

“She didn’t just attend board meetings, she showed up for our community,” said Knight.

Knight explained that McNally could often be found at local schools, whether she was dressed as Mrs. Claus for Christmas season, judging a cooking class, keeping score at a basketball game, officiating a track meet or serving a pancake breakfast to graduating students at Earl Marriott Secondary before they crossed the stage.

She also attended countless school concerts, performances and plays through her time as a trustee, said Knight.

“Four decades is a long time,” said Knight before noting that McNally has been part of the lives of multiple generations of White Rock students.

Knight thanked McNally on behalf of the City of White Rock before presenting her with flowers, a gift and a certificate of appreciation.

As McNally steps away from the White Rock trustee seat, the upcoming election will see three candidates vying for the spot: Dee Reiter, Phillip Warner and Laura Lattanzio.
