The BC SPCA’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre is putting out a call for acorns and berries to help keep some of its hungry patients fed.

Wild ARC, located in Metchosin, says it is currently looking for donations of acorns to feed squirrels and other wildlife undergoing rehabilitation.

“The BC SPCA’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre is putting out a call for acorns and berries to help keep some of its hungry patients fed,” the organization said in a social media post.

Wild ARC is asking people collecting acorns to do so responsibly and leave plenty behind for wildlife that depend on them in the wild.

Wild ARC is also looking to restock its freezers with berries, including blackberries, blueberries and raspberries, as well as other wild or garden-grown varieties. The fruit is used to feed songbirds and other animals in its care.

One item it doesn’t need is apples. Wild ARC says it already has plenty of wind-fallen apples thanks to previous donations.

“Every acorn and berry helps provide nutritious, species-appropriate diets for animals on their road to recovery,” the organization said.

Anyone who finds an injured or orphaned squirrel is advised not to attempt to care for it themselves. Instead, the BC SPCA recommends contacting a wildlife rehabilitation centre or its Animal Helpline at 1-855-622-7722 for advice.

Those looking to donate to Wild ARC can find out more information on the orgnaization’s website.
