A pair of federal announcements will see over $35 million support a pair of infrastructure projects in Winnipeg.
At Bourkevale Park, over $27 million will fund the Rutland Trunk Sewer Project aimed at improving stormwater drainage and reducing the amount of sewage overflow into the Assiniboine River.
The project will see a new trunk land drainage sewer built through the area, including along Rutland Street from Portage Avenue to Silver Avenue.
The roughly two-kilometre sewer is being built using micro tunnelling, with the project also including a new outfall into the Assiniboine River.
The federal funding is part of a broader investment in Winnipeg’s infrastructure and is expected to help improve the City’s ability to manage heavy rainfall and stormwater.
“We have new homes being built, businesses expanding, and more families moving into the community. As the city grows, we need to make sure our infrastructure can keep up, and this is why investments like this in infrastructure matter,” said Doug Eyolfson, MP for Winnipeg West.
Meanwhile, in downtown Winnipeg, another major investment was announced. The federal government is putting more than $8 million towards the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg Downtown Y Redevelopment Project.
“It’s a place where young families can feel like they’re included and that they are members of this beautifully vibrant community of ours. It’s a place where folks who are struggling can come and seek support,” said Ben Carr, the MP for Winnipeg South Centre.
The historic facility that dates back to 1913 will see upgrades to its elevators, change rooms, aquatics and fitness areas, along with expanded newcomer, mental health and community programming.
“$8 million is an extraordinary investment in the downtown Y, but this is not just about a building. This is an investment in downtown. It is who we are, but also who we can also become. That’s that kind of investment. It’s an investment in the people that will shape the future of downtown,” said Cordella Frieson, the president and CEO of YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg.
