While he confirmed this Tuesday morning that he will continue in F1 until 2027, Fernando Alonso is already looking further ahead…
It is now certain that Fernando Alonso will return for another year, teaming up again with Lance Stroll at Aston Martin in 2027. The two-time Spanish world champion discussed this decision in the pages of the daily newspaper As, explaining that while he doesn’t particularly enjoy driving his AMR26, he has a duty to finish what he started with Aston Martin.
“I will continue in Formula 1 next year, and after several months of reflection, I think it’s the right decision. I don’t like these cars this year, that’s the truth, and I’ve said it several times. At the same time, I think we need to finish the work we started with Aston Martin; all the elements are in place with the factory, the wind tunnel, Adrian Newey, and our partners. We need to put the pieces together little by little. It started badly this year, but that doesn’t mean the trend can’t be reversed, and I want to be part of the project when it is.”
Asked about the possibility that 2027 could be his last year driving a Formula 1 car, the Asturian is optimistic and believes he can stay in a paddock he has frequented since 2001 for a few more years.
“I don’t think this will be my last year in F1. I’m having fun, I’m managing travel, media and sponsorship demands effectively… I have more experience and I’m better at organizing my time, I think I can continue for several more years.”
One thing is certain: the 45-year-old driver wants to continue his adventure with Aston Martin, even beyond his racing career. Having been close to Lawrence Stroll for many years, Alonso is therefore expected to eventually join the Formula 1 team’s management structure once he has hung up his helmet.
“I have an advantage, which is that this team is like a family. I’ve known Lawrence for 15 years and Lance since he was 12. We talk about thousands of things every day, not just Formula 1. We have many projects, and it’s not a question of signing for one more year or ten. I’ll be with Aston Martin for a long time; we’ll have to see in what role. Behind the wheel or not, we’ll decide that in due course.”
