The Navy women’s soccer team had Lehigh on the ropes throughout the majority of the action on Wednesday night, but were unable to land a finishing blow to seal three points in the standings as the Mountain Hawks came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw. The Mids (8-4-1, 1-1-1 PL) stacked numerous high percentage scoring chances together during the contest and had a substantial 21-12 advantage in total shots, but the Mountain Hawks (2-5-3, 0-2-1 PL) pulled even with just under two minutes in regulation at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility to net the tie.

Navy’s offense was highlighted by well structured goals from Kayana Adlam in the 25th minute and Jordan Townsend in the 77th.

The action on Wednesday night opened evenly with both teams recording three shots over the initial 20 minutes of play. Momentum quickly swung to Navy’s side in the 25th minute when the hosts carved through Lehigh’s midfield and defensive third with a series of passes that culminated with Jessica Black feeding Chiara Cosenza from the left wing and Cosenza immediately opening her body up for one more pass to the right with a perfectly placed lead pass for Adlam. The speedy forward took two dribbles, drew the goalkeeper from the cage and expertly ripped a shot in the far upper-90 for a 1-0 lead at 24:08.

The Mids kept up the pressure and hunt for a second goal throughout the remaining 20-plus minutes of the first half, but came up empty to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission. Overall, Navy dominated the scoring opportunities with an 11-3 advantage in total shots though only a 3-1 edge in shots on goal.

That ratio would loom large in the second half when the Mids held just a one-goal lead coming out of the locker room. The competition in the final 45 minutes was much more evenly matched as both teams were able to traverse end-to-end and pepper each of the opposing goalkeepers quite frequently. In the initial 15 minutes of the second half, Navy tested Lehigh’s goalkeeper R’Reeyah Mabry-Francis with three shots on goal, while the Mountain Hawks forced the newly-inserted Natasha Stramrood into back-to-back saves within 30 seconds of each other in the 51st minute.

The constant action in the defensive third finally resulted in a goal for the Mountain Hawks as Aminah Burawa struck a left-footed shot into the back of the net at 65:31 to draw even at 1-1.

The Mids’ nose for the goal came into play just over 11 minutes later at 76:07 when Madison Whitworth curled a high arching corner kick towards the back post where Townsend powerfully headed the ball home for the go-ahead goal. The score was the first of Townsend’s career.

With the minutes counting down and Navy closing in on three points in the league table, Lehigh had other plans and scrambled to the finish line with a Cyndea Labissiere game-tying goal at 88:07.

For the game, Navy out-shot Lehigh, 21-12 with a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. The Mids also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Talley Applewhite and Stramrood split time in goal for the Mids on Wednesday with Applewhite making one save in the first half and Stramrood denying three scoring opportunities in the second stanza.

Last Time Out: Saturday, Sept. 26 vs. Colgate in Annapolis
Playing its first and only home game in the month of September, the Navy women’s soccer team treated its fans at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility to an exhilarating 3-1 win over Colgate to capture a victory in its Patriot League home opener on Saturday afternoon. The Mids (8-4-1, 1-1 PL) broke out to an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute before having to re-take the lead in the second half with a response 34 seconds after the Raiders (1-8-2, 0-2 PL) temporarily drew even.

Navy’s underclass provided the offensive highlights on Saturday as all goals and assists came from freshmen and sophomores. Stella Jones engaged the scoring with the game’s first goal, while Faith Graziano was credited with the game-winning tally. Sofia Grundy notched the Mids’ insurance marker with her first collegiate goal.

Coming in with just one goal scored over its past six contests, Colgate was hungry to break through on the offensive side of the ball. The Raiders immediately challenged the Mids and goalkeeper Natasha Stramrood 81 seconds into the game when Brooke Bodamer laced a shot on frame that forced Stramrood to leap up and bat the ball over the goal. Withstanding that early threat invigorated Navy on the other end of the pitch as Jones found the back of the net just over six minutes into the game at 6:11 when Emmalea Sidorsky fed her up the right wing and the freshman midfielder took two dribbles into the 18-yard box before unleashing a low line drive shot into the lower left corner.

Up 1-0, the Mids continued to pressure the Raiders in hopes of doubling their lead throughout the rest of the first half. The home squad took nine more shots, though all four of the attempts that were on goal were denied by Ella Poppinga. Navy’s two most dangerous looks were a Helen Bonner shot off a give-and-go with Graziano in the 36th minute and a Lauren Toms header off a Sona Gonzales corner kick in the 43rd.

With the score 1-0 coming out of the locker rooms following halftime, Saturday’s end result was still very much up for grabs as a Colgate registered the stanza’s first shot on goal when Molly Richards received a lead pass and was denied by Stramrood just as she got her got her shot off at point blank range.

The Raiders continued making in-roads in the Mids’ defensive third and eventually drew even at 63:47 courtesy of a Lydia Thornton score.

The scoreboard wasn’t idle for long as an efficient two-player build between Jessica Black and Graziano put Navy right back in the lead 34 seconds later at 64:21.

Back in the lead, the Mids kept their foot on the gas offensively with Black in the mix once again. A little over three minutes later, a looping service into the box by Margaret Pritchard was chased down by Black, who without hesitating back-heel flicked the ball to the waiting Grundy for a one-time no-doubt shot and score at 67:59.

Ahead 3-1, Navy silenced Colgate for the remaining 20-plus minutes to seal the conference victory. Stramrood was called upon twice during this final run of play to make saves, both of which came in the last two minutes.

The junior goalkeeper finished her performance with five total saves.

For the game, Navy out-shot Colgate, 21-10 with a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Mids also held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
