You often hear about actors who abhor the idea of watching their own films, as if the very idea of it might cause them to spontaneously combust in a plume of self-absorption. Seemingly, though, when you’ve been in as many films as Jeff Bridges, avoiding your own work is much easier said than done.
With an extensive, illustrious filmography that stretches all the way back to the early 1970s, or even the 1950s, if you were to count his uncredited infant appearance in The Company She Keeps, Bridges has always been a performer who seems to revel in creative diversity.
Comedies, thrillers, sports biopics, sci-fi fantasies, and even a version of King Kong, he has explored far more avenues than most actors when it comes to the roles he takes on. Inevitably, though, certain roles have stood the test of time better than others.
While reducing any actor of Bridges’ ilk to one singular performance would be almost offensive, it is fair to say that the vast majority of people, if pushed to give the title of a Jeff Bridges film, would respond with The Big Lebowski. The Coen brothers’ finest hour, his lead performance in the 1998 film, instantly committed itself to cult status upon release, routinely hailed among the greatest American comedies of the last 30 years.
Despite presumably being hit with one of the many iconic quotes from The Big Lebowski anytime he has set foot in public over the past 28 years, though, the film has never seemed to lose its appeal for the man himself.
Of all the many roles the actor has taken on over the years, ‘The Dude’ remains a firm favourite, to the extent that Bridges will happily watch and re-watch the film as though he isn’t its main star.
“When one of my movies comes on TV, and I’m surfing the channels and I land on it, I’ll usually watch one scene and then, click, I turn to something else,” the actor once revealed to Esquire, suggesting that he’s not against reminiscing on his career, but he isn’t keen to revel in the two-hour runtime of 8 Million Ways to Die.

He will, on the other hand, sit through his adventures as ‘The Dude’ whenever the opportunity presents itself, although it isn’t clear if he goes the whole hog, constructing a White Russian and donning a dressing gown.
“If it’s The Big Lebowski, I get sucked in,” he shared, “I can’t help it. Each scene is so great, and all the actors are terrific. Wherever I am, I’ll end up watching it till the end”.
“The John Turturro stuff at the bowling alley. Oh, God! He’s amazing,” he added, heaping praise onto one of his co-stars from the film.
As the film’s cult audience can attest to The Big Lebowski boasts an endlessly rewatchable quality that has helped to maintain its legendary reputation over the years. Seemingly, though, it has also managed to keep things fresh enough to keep Bridges himself entertained.
