LETTER: Surrey needs a ward system for municipal elections

Editor,

When will B.C. municipalities adopt a ward system like other major cities in Canada? Expecting voters, in Surrey for example, to study the backgrounds and platforms of 67 candidates is unrealistic. No wonder voter turnout for municipal elections is so low!

With six or seven wards, however, there would be only nine or 10 candidates for voters to consider – a much less intimidating and more manageable task. And the councillor elected from that ward would be much more knowledgeable of the issues of their ward and be better able to represent the residents’ interest.
