A recent charity golf tournament in Abbotsford raised more than $78,000 to support the work of caring for women and children in Mexico.

The organization Casa de Luz held the fifth annual on Sept. 22 at Ledgeview Golf Course.

The golf tournament supports the work of Casa de Luz, which helps vulnerable single mothers and their children living in poverty in Mexico.

“Casa de Luz would love to thank the community for showing up to participate and each local business that supported the event by sponsoring holes, donating prizes and making the day such a success,” a press release states.

The purpose of the tournament is to raise funds so these families can continue to receive the food, safety, education and trauma care they so desperately need.

Golfers could also donate to CDL’s newest project, which will create four emergency housing spaces for families fleeing violence and needing a temporary space to live while they heal and work toward rebuilding their lives as part of the CDL program.

“It’s really the community coming together to support the work that makes it such a great day, especially our local businesses who participate each year,” said Gary Stephens, CDL executive director.

“They show up, plan events at each hole to make it so fun, and make the whole day possible, really. Their support is invaluable to us.”
